For the United States readers, here’s a fourth of july x core four mashup. Enjoy!

The fourth of July was a lot of things. In theory, it was a patriotic holiday where everyone claimed their love for the United States; but it was just an excuse to eat potato salad and set off explosives.

For the core four, it was about the same, minus the potato salad.

The four kids had requested the weekend off from work, deciding to spend the holiday in Coney Island. They packed towels and snacks, and Chad made sure to sneak a ton of fireworks into his backpack. It was going to be fun. It was new. It was something normal.

Tara wasn’t so sure about the whole plan. She couldn’t stand the idea of wearing a bikini- who would want to see the scars of a human pincushion? She looked ugly. Scarred. The opposite of a beach body. Plus, she hated fireworks. She hated the loud bangs, the sudden noises. She hated how she could feel the noises in her chest. It hurt.

But Sam promised that it would be fun. Well, more like forcibly kissing Tara all over her face and hugging her until Tara vowed to have fun.

And she did. It was… normal. And fun.

Mindy braided her hair and gave her an oversized “Legally Blonde” t-shirt to don. Neither of the twins minded if she wore a T-shirt and shorts instead of a bathing suit.

“As long as I can throw you into the ocean, that’s all that matters,” Chad had teased, dodging a swat from his sister.

And the beach was nice. Packed and sweltering hot, but a nice break from reality. Sam got to tan while Tara and Mindy built a massive sandcastle, and Chad joined in on a game of beach football with a pack of guys. Mindy had made the best Caesar wraps and made one without chicken for Sam (who was going vegan because animal blood stresses her out too much to consume meat). Chad offered beers to the sisters, but they opted for sodas instead.

Tara felt normal. She felt alive even. The sun and the salty air fueled her with hope. Hope that she might be okay one day. With her family around her, Tara felt damn near invincible.

Towards the night's end, they prepared their spot on the sand for the fireworks show. The twins were on their stomachs, chatting about their favorite type of fireworks. Tara was nestled in Sam’s lap, trying to stop shaking from nerves. Her sister could sense her anxiety and hummed Tara’s favorite song as she rubbed her back.

The twins knew Tara’s disdain for fireworks, giving her ample space to diffuse. Chad had already learned his lesson for teasing Tara- the hand-shaped mark on his sunburned back was a reminder.

“I don’t get why you had to smack me that hard. I deserved it, but that was hard,” he complained, glaring at his sister.

Mindy just rolled her eyes. “You know why. Plus, I’m the smarter sibling. I naturally am allowed to hit harder,”.

He rolled onto his back with a huff, staring at the sky. “I hope the firework show is cool. I don’t want to see something lame,”.

His sister put down her phone, side-eyeing him. “Chad, the United States Air Force could slap a spoon to a plane, and you would be amazed at the flashing light,”

Chad scoffed, throwing his towel at Mindy’s head. “Not true. It would have to be a massive spoon, maybe,”.

Tara smiled, leaning into her sister’s embrace. The twins had argued on and off all day, but it was all good fun. They loved each other. But probably not as much as she loved her big sister.

Sam looked down at her, her eyes shining with fondness. “You gonna be okay, my love?” she whispered, kissing Tara’s hair.

Her sister nodded, curling into Sam. “As long as you’re with me, I’ll be okay. Promise me you’ll hold my hand, though, okay?”.

Her big sister laughed a little, squeezing Tara tight. “Always. I always will,”.
